The Envelope
Architecture had its beginnings in protecting human beings. The work of architecture begins with construction of an “outer envelope” for a building, an envelope that transforms natural spaces into artificial ones. This highly active layer is a boundary through which exterior and interior engage in a dialogue as they interpenetrate and generate new relationships. An ingeniously designed outer skin blocks what is unwanted but allows the essential to flow in, while also transmitting information. The outer skin and its enclosed spaces have shared lives, just like the membrane of a cell and its inner cytoplasm.
In its simplest form, the envelope appropriately functions as a window, which may become an adjustable grille or an expanded mesh through which light is filtered. The envelope can also contain spaces such as balconies, corridors or arcades where people can gather. An autonomous envelope creates an intriguing new kind of beauty.
