Qing Tian Residence

Qing Tian Residence lies quietly between the Taipei Grand Mosque and the Holy Family Catholic Church. It overlooks Daan Park to the east and connects to Qing Tian Street on the west. This historic block is rich in both natural beauty and cultural heritage. It is where we grew up.

Qing Tian Residence is a single-block, nine-story residential complex comprising seven units. The site faces south and is arranged in a three-sided enclosure with a single open side, forming a “U”-shaped layout. The three enclosed sides, wrapped in stone walls, provide private spaces for the residents, while the south-facing façade, including the living room and other public areas, features large, clean-lined windows that bring in natural light and breezes, creating a comfortable and airy interior environment.

The building’s façade features a minimalist composition of copper roofing, stone walls, wooden grilles, and large windows, arranged in an interplay of solids and voids. Over time, the copper develops a verdigris patina, and the wood grain gradually lightens. Turning off the quiet alley, one passes through the tranquil gate into a lowered, recessed corridor that marks the beginning of the circulation. An L-shaped pool extends from the exterior into the interior, and through the large windows one can see straight into the hallway’s sofa area, enhancing the perception of movement through the space.

At the time, we had just started our practice and sought to break away from the prevailing stereotype of lavish mansion decoration, returning instead to a faithful expression of the house in terms of its environment, space, and materials, allowing it to integrate humbly into the surrounding skyline.
